Introduction
Partnering for
Sustainability
The California Community Colleges/Investor Owned Utility
Partnership (CCC/IOU)* is proud to sponsor the 2009 Community College
Sustainability Training Series - a 4-course series focusing on sustainability
in Higher Education facilities, and applicable operations and maintenance ideas to
‘green’ existing buildings which will
help save energy, money & the environment.
The fall 2009 series
will be hosted and /or web and video cast to seven different Community College
Campuses across California. Check the
course listing below for the hosting campus nearest to you.
Course Description and Date
Course Title: Introduction
to Sustainability and Life Cycle Costing
Presented by: San Diego Gas & Electric Co.
Date: October 16,
2009
This workshop introduces the concept of sustainability and
how it relates to business and everyday life. Attendees will learn techniques
to better manage energy production and use, water procurement and use, and
waste management, including recycling. Learn to apply life cycle costing to
evaluate projects using the time value of money, interest rates, discounting,
cash flows and net present value (NPV) of projects. The concept of
environmental sustainability is used to explain the applicability of life cycle
costing toward evaluating the energy efficiency of projects.
Course Title: Transformers: Turning Existing Buildings "Green"
Presented by: Southern California
Edison
Date: October 30,
2009
Owners and operators of existing buildings can improve their
property’s energy performance and make a true claim to “sustainability” by
attending this workshop. Receive an
overview of operations and maintenance (O&M) techniques for transforming
existing buildings into greener facilities. Learn how landscaping practices, water usage, waste disposal, indoor
environmental control, and energy efficiency influence the sustainability of
buildings. A discussion of various
guidelines and standards for sustainability will be included, along with
practical ideas for low cost “green” O&M practices.
Course Title: Lighting Your Way To Zero Net
Presented by: Pacific Gas &
Electric Co.
Date: November
6, 2009
Daylighting is key to designing net zero energy buildings. But even in an optimally-fenestrated building,
electric illumination remains necessary to allow year ‘round and extended use
of the building. Daylighting and electric lighting need to be considered as a
package and well-integrated while designing buildings and building controls
systems. After-the-fact fixes can be costly. This presentation includes thought
provoking and proven concepts in electrical illumination that dramatically
improve overall building energy efficiency and visual comfort.
Course Title: The Water and Energy Connection
Presented by: Southern California Gas Co.
Date: December 4, 2009
California is taking a serious look at the
water-energy-greenhouse gas relationship. Saving water saves energy, either in cooling
towers on buildings, or at thermal power plants which use large amounts of
water for cooling. Saving water used
outdoors via pumping, treatment and delivery is good; however, saving hot water
used indoors is better still. This class will assist participants in
calculating the magnitude of the water-energy-greenhouse gas connection for
their facilities.
Participants should bring
to class basic information from their facilities on the amount of water used
and waste water discharged. Additionally, bring information on energy use (kW,
kWh and therms), ideally broken out into types of use.
